Compliance with Discharge Permits is part of the daily life at most water treatment plants if you are treating wastewater, potable water, industrial or agricultural waste, food processing water, or contaminated ground or surface water. Whether you are discharging your effluent to waters of the US, ground water, other state regulated bodies of water, or into another permitted municipal treatment system, you are facing limitations that originated in a Discharge Permit. Many of your actions (such as sample collection, maintenance, documentation, etc.) and processes (e.g. nutrient removal, solids digestion, disinfection, etc.) at the treatment plant are driven by your discharge permit’s requirements.
This workshop will explain where these requirements originate, where the appropriate state regulations can be found, and which agencies you will be working with to obtain and maintain a Discharge Permit. Step by step you will learn about what information you will find in your Discharge Permit and what is necessary to meet those requirements. In particular we will cover the following items:
- Application process
- “Boiler plate” information found in the permit
- Loading limits
- Effluent limits
- Special limitations specific to your operation
- Reclaimed water requirements
- How & when to communicate with your regulator
- Reporting requirements
- Operator certification requirements
- Laboratory Accreditation requirements
- Permit renewal
State Waste & NPDES Permits also require the permittee to comply with all other applicable regulations even if they are not specifically spelled out in your discharge permit. You will learn about these “implied” requirements, such as biosolids, pretreatment, stormwater, solid waste management, etc.
We encourage all workshop attendees to bring copies of their permits to the class so we can address your questions and help you better understand your permits.
This “Regulatory Compliance – State Waste & NPDES Discharge Permit” workshop will provide you with an essential understanding of your Discharge Permit, how to become and remain compliant with its requirements, and how to address deficiencies.
